THE MEANING OF LIFE

TEV for reacquainting us with this unforgettable monologue from Alex Cox’s REPO MAN:
"A lot of people don't realize what's really going on. They view life as a bunch of unconnected incidences and things. They don't realize that there's this like lattice of coincidence that lays on top of everything. I'll give you an example, show you what I mean. Suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. Suddenly somebody will say like "plate" or "shrimp" or "plate of shrimp" out of the blue, no explanation. No point in looking for one either. It's all part of a cosmic unconsciousness."

*I would argue, and am sure to get some hate-mail for saying so, that the success of, say, THE LOVELY BONES had as much to do with luck as with the (admittedly very smart) marketing energy that went into its publication. And in anticipation of that hate-mail, let me clarify: there are three components that have to be considered in such a case:
1. the subjective nature of individual taste.
2. the marketing energy etc.; and
3. sheer dumb luck.

ON THE SUBJECT OF RESURRECTING THE TRUE [NON-PEJORATIVE] MEANING OF "MIDLIST"
